EVERYONE NEEDS COMPASSION
Every day I travel, I'm reminded of these 3 words. "Everyone needs compassion". We take for granted the blessings bestowed upon us and easily forget those less fortunate. We forget that not long ago we to were less fortunate. I went through a lot of hardship in my life. I suffered from alcohol addiction, depression, and ultimately became homeless.
What does it mean to have compassion?
To have compassion means to empathize with someone who is suffering and to feel compelled to reduce the suffering.
I'm reminded of this every morning at 42nd st Bryant park. Each time I walk down the tunnel to catch my next train, I run into an elderly man. He sits in his walker with a cup in his hand. Watching people come and go, he shakes his cup. Signaling them for spare change.
I don't know what his story is, what he's been through in life, or how he ended up in this situation. Nor do I dare ask. However, understanding the process of hardship, knowing one day I needed someone to have compassion over me. I am reminded everyone needs compassion.
Every morning I try to make sure I have something for him. Whether it be spare change, loose bills, or even a snack, I try. However what's consistent about this man is that he always gives you a smile, even if you don't have anything for him.
Help keep this individual in prayer, the Lord knows his story. Our responsibility is to pray and help those in need. Thank you, my friends and God bless you.
