The start of a new year is approaching. Soon 2020 will end and a new chapter begins in our lives. Knowing this, I started looking back at my journal from 2019. A lot of scrambles entries. However, this one stands out to me. I think and pray this will enlighten someone. Let me know what you think.
What does the Bible say about drinking Alcohol?
Here are some facts that'll help you better understand God's word, on drinking alcohol.
1- Alcohol can cause you to become poor
(Proverbs 21:17 - "Whoever loves pleasure will become poor; whoever loves wine and olive oil will never be rich." )
I can attest to this. When I was struggling with alcohol addiction, one of the common occurrences was that I was always broke. The was more evident when I became homeless. I'd spend all my money on Alcohol.
2- Alcohol will destroy you
(Proverbs 23:29-35 - "Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaints? Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes? Those who linger over wine, who go to sample bowls of mixed wine. Do not gaze at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly! In the end it bites like a snake and poisons like a viper. Your eyes will see strange sights, and your mind will imagine confusing things. You will be like one sleeping on the high seas, lying on top of the rigging. “They hit me,” you will say, “but I’m not hurt! They beat me, but I don’t feel it! When will I wake up so I can find another drink?”)
Alcohol is also extremely addictive. It is also a toxin. When you consume alcohol, you kill cells located throughout the body. You expose your body and mind to a variety of ailments, some of which are more life-threatening than others. As the liver can only absorb a few units of alcohol per hour, excess alcohol which cannot be immediately processed by the liver is stored in the blood until the liver has a chance to break the alcohol down into water and oxygen.
3- God will judge those who are controlled by Alcohol
(Isaiah 5:22 - "Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine and champions at mixing drinks")
4- Becoming drunk is dangerous
(Luke 21:34 - "Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you suddenly like a trap")
5- Excessive drinking will lead to other sins
(Romans 13:11-14 - "And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy.14 Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.")
6- God hates Drunkenness
(Galatians 5:19-21 - "The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.")
7- Drinking makes a fool of you
(Proverbs 20:1 - "Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise.")
The road to recovery is difficult, however, when we truly surrender our life to God, all things are possible. Jesus reminds us of this in Matthew 19:26.
When I began this journey, I often found myself at a crossroad choosing between my next drink or pleasing God. Pleasing God is challenging but rewarding. Each time I made the decision to please God, alcohol addiction began to fade away. No longer was I thirsty for another shot. Instead, I was and am enjoying a rewarding life of true freedom.
While there are many more biblical facts about drinking alcohol, I just wanted to share a few interesting ones, from my journal entry. Thank you for reading my friend.
