Introduction to Print on demand
When I 1st started designing t-shirts, I was lost and needed a lot of guidance. But there wasn't really any articles out there that really helped. Terms like P.O.D. were being used and I was like, is that a rock band? I was confused, lol.
Until finally, I understood what P.O.D. meant. It was short for Print On Demand. In this article, we'll give you an "Introduction to Print on demand". What are some P.O.D products, who uses P.O.D, and how does P.O.D work?
What is Print On Demand (P.O.D.)?
Print on demand is a printing technology and business process in which copies are not printed until the company receives an order, allowing prints of single or small quantities.
What are some P.O.D products?
P.O.D is used by many companies and for many products. From books to T-shirts, P.O.D is has become very popular. Companies like Amazon use this business process for book publishing. This is how so many people, like myself, can self-publish a book.
That's right! You read that correctly. I published a book. In fact, I've published many books. I've even helped many others with the process of self-publishing books. Just to give you an idea, here's a few products used for print on demand. Books, journals, phone cases, stickers, t-shirts, hoodies, blankets, canvas mugs, etc...
Who uses P.O.D?
As mentioned earlier, Amazon uses the P.O.D process. However, before you look into Amazon, consider setting up an online shop with Teepublic. The setup process is super easy and their layout displays your content/work really good. They're great for artists, freelance businesses, bloggers, and YouTubers. That's right YouTubers.
YouTubers have started promoting their own products, or as they would say it, merch. Most YouTubers higher someone like me, a graphic designer to come up with a design for them. Some designs require artwork others are just simple text or a famous quote.
Some graphic designers use adobe photoshop or illustrator. I primarily use photoshop for my artwork and illustrator for text designs. Sometimes I'll use both.

I actually have several online shops. Each with its own unique style of artwork or quotes.
How does P.O.D work?
You sign with a company (in most cases it's free) to sell your content on their products. In exchange, you'll receive a commission for each sale.
For example:
Meet Richie. Richie is an artist and wants to sell his artwork but doesn't have the storage space, and the funds available to keep a stockpile of his work. He opens up an online shop with Teepulic and begins selling his artwork. Teepulic pays him once a month his commissions base on his sales on a monthly basis. Teepublic takes care of the entire process, leaving him with more time to be creative with your artwork.
